"* ...when I began having migraines, I suffered a sudden slash of pain, very intense and quick on the right side of my head. It started at one point and webbed out to what it felt like a inch in length... it scared me.
* ...intense, sharp, stabbing pain about your skull, as if you were being stabbed with an ice pick.
* ...awakened at 3 a.m. by excruciating, stabbing pains on the top right front of my head, kind of behind the eye. lasted about 30 seconds.

They're "ice pick headaches." They are short, stabbing, extremely intense headaches that can be absolutely terrifying. They generally only last between five and 30 seconds. However, they come out of nowhere, can strike anywhere on the head, literally feel as if an ice pick is being stuck into your head, then disappear before you can even figure out what's happening. The pain can also seem to occur in or behind the ear.

International Headache Society's (IHS) criteria, the official name for them is "primary stabbing headache. "

so that's my day in a nutshell. i guess this is common in people who suffer from migraines. which blows because i take meds for it every damn day and still get this crap and sometimes migraines too.

I always wondered what the fuck those were! I would be like, OW-OW-OW, dude, did a vein just break in my head? WTF?? Where do you get them?

I always get them on the right side, either in my temple or on back side of my head near the bottom. Sometimes I'll get one that starts on the temple and then shoots around to the back, those are fun. They last about three seconds but hurt like HELL, as I'm sure you know. Then I'll have them off and on all day, just randomly enough that I walk around completely paranoid.

Sorry you have this problem too. I'm REALLY glad to know what they are now, thanks for posting this. I'm so tired of going to the doctor for other crap, I just decided that if my head exploded or something I'd be okay with it.

Sorry you're still getting migraines as well, I still do despite the damn beta blocker, although WAY less of them and they don't last as long (maybe a day), which I guess is an improvement.

It's still the suck though.

i get them on the right side, mostly in my eye socket and the very base of my head in the back. they are hellish little bastards. at first i thought i was having an aneurysm but i calmed down and asked the doc that figured out i was having migraines 24/7 and she told me what they were.

the beta blocker has helped immensley, but it hasn't prohibited them completely. i still get maybe 2-3 a week (more if i'm stressed) but compared to never NOT having one that's a massive improvement.

i think you and i are telepathically sharing health problems, lol.
