so to add to how much i hate my apartment, a new issue has come to light - this one is serious.

every once in a while when joey and i are both gone during the day, we come home to the door being unlocked. now, if you knew us, and this building, the tenants and the area we live in, we NEVER leave the door unlocked when we leave. the first time it happened i thought it was just me being absent minded though i've never done anything like that before.

we have a LOT of expensive stuff, so this makes me uncomfortable. nice bass, bass amp, expensive headphones, numerous ipods, a $2000 tv, ps3, xbox360 and so on and so on. this makes me very uncomfortable. so what does a paranoid uncomfortable girl do?

turn her mac into a security cam. HA!

but what can i do if i find out that the apartment staff *is* coming into our apartment without our consent?

Yargh. I have no idea.. it's a clear violation of Ohio Tenant's Rights (google that, I'm sure it's out there) but beyond that, no idea.

Please tell me you have renter's insurance.

it's a violation of tenant rights, and I know you can report it I'm just not sure if it's to the police or what. You can also show the video to your landlord and tell them that if it happens again you're taking action.

I wouldn't show the landlord that you're recording him. That would just give him the desire to sneak around more.
The best thing to do is to contact the city of Kent and ask who to talk to regarding violation of tenant's rights. You live off-campus, but, since you're in a college town, I'm sure they take tenant's rights rather seriously. Keep recording and write down all the issues with the apartment in order to build a case, and go from there.
I had to help a client do this once. Not only am I their friendly computer person, I'm also their resourceful go-to man about town!

i make just over $8 an hour, and joey doesn't work. you think i can afford renter's insurance? lol.

when i get my promotion i will most certainly get it, but it's a luxery right now that i just can't afford.

i dunno if i'd even give them the chance to know i know. i already imagine that the excuse is gonna be all "well, we had a complaint about xyz and had to check it out" but they're not allowed to come in without our permission.

issues, like the mold that has had me sick for over a year now? or just finding our doors unlocked?

right and if you end up having some kind of video of them doing whatever that'll just prove your point.

Renter's insurance is like... really cheap. like it wouldn't hurt to ask cheap.

Gabe and I pay roughly $30/month for $50k worth of coverage, and once we're established with Liberty Mutual, I'll increase it. Given the electronics we own, it's absolutely worth it. Try to fit it into your budget when you can.
