thanks poop, for passing this along... i think...
i don't know that it was the republicans who attached the inc. or tm to the situation so much as that's just what happens to things in america. we rip away the sanctity of things that are better left alone and figure out just how to capitalize. that's how a capitalist society works, hence why i've always been more of a socialist at heart (note: i do NOT believe socialism leads to communism, i believe it is a whole new beast - and those who deem socialism otherwise are beating a dead horse right alongside of karl marx).
now, i've chosen to remember or "never forget" or whatever the hell else hallmark term can be attached to it in my own personal ways because the entire situation was truly a personal hell for those of us that had loved ones trapped up there, are from there, and saw a piece of our beloved city crumble. for me it wasn't "we's gonna go catch us some terrorists, a-hyuck!" it was more standing in total horror as i watched business men leap to their death from miles above in a final desperate attempt to *not* be burned alive, covered in jet fuel, on cnn for the world to see. a friend of mine told me of a situation (he lived on liberty street - where i once called home) where he said it sounded as though it had started raining. he looked up toward the (at the time) still collapsing towers and realized that it was the sound of those very same people leaping for their last chance, smacking into the ground. to me, that speaks volumes, fucking volumes, of just what a horrible situation it was.
i remember the day after it happened ::sits back in rocking chair with cup of tea and faraway look in her eye:: i was at work in a bar. on the television was this plain black screen with simple white words relaying a truly nice message to those both directly affected by the attacks and americans in general. i got a little teary-eyed as i read until the end when a giant yellow and green label assaulted the screen and subway assured us "united we stand." untied we stand indeed, in line at taco bell from now on.
i usually try to keep this all to myself because we're all fucking tired of "i remember exactly where i was on 9/11" much like the kennedy assassination. but goddammit if i'm not fucking tired of people arguing over who made the situation a commercial. fuck man, build your political campaign on a situation that would have never happened had our political leaders not been so "my dad can beat of your dad" with the rest of the goddamn world. promise us you have a better plan, a better foreign policy, a better sense of clarity - lie to me pinocchio, lie to me! but don't you dare, don't you fucking dare, claim for one second you have america's best interest in mind. mr mccain knows how to win wars?! excuse me if i wonder how he came about this knowledge - either when he got captured by the vietcong showing his obvious expertise at following orders from his commanding officers or by participating in fucking VIETNAM - A WAR WE WERE THE UNDISPUTED 'LOSERS' OF.
even my father, a hardcore republican who fought in vietnam for several tours, has renounced his party and doesn't know *who* to vote for anymore, or even why. he agrees with me, they're all just republi-crats now, and its pointless to hope for a better world with someone else driving this go-cart to hell. the fact remains the experiment that was america is a fucking failure. plain and simple. now those of us unfortunate enough to be born here can't escape, because the rest of the world hates us (that and the rest of the world works on the metric system so we'd all be fucked).
i remember a tear-stricken john stewart addressing the daily show viewers, explaining how the view from his apartment was always the world trade center (can you believe i actually once got into an argument with some dumbass at college over the name of it? she SWORE it was the world traits center. seriously.), how devastated he was to have to watch helplessly while the towers collapsed, but he went on to say that after the smoke and dust had finally settled there was a new view from his apartment - the statue of liberty.
9/11 tm? yes. but i hope that eventually it'll stop being a political platform and the big wigs will offer some sense of humility, and let the nation mourn without hearing why "they's gonna git them that dirty terrorist" that has eluded us for seven years now. an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
and i leave you with that.
